Green Party standing in West Ward City Council By Election

2 October 2015

Alex Airey profile Sept 15Alex Airey is standing for the Green Party in a by election due to take place on Thursday 29th October.

Alex stood for Central Ward in the May local elections.

On that occasion he came third in his ward with around 9% of the vote, the highest share the Green Party has achieved to date in the closely fought Central Ward. In that same election, over 400 people voted for the Green Party in West Ward.

Voting Green on 29th October will help bring real change to Peterborough.

"If elected, I would champion the rebuilding of our city's  public transport network alongside campaigning for reductions in fares. This would help people who can't afford private vehicles to maintain their independence.

As a keen cyclist, I would also advocate for improved cycling provision in the city."

Electors may be curious why a by election is happening so soon after the May local elections.

A casual vacancy arose as a result of Councillor Arculus (Conservative) who resigned as a councillor.  His resignation was received just too late for an election to be held alongside the local elections in May 2015. Had the council received his resignation earlier the vacancy could have been contested in May (as happened in Stanground).

In cases such as this an election is not automatic, but on this occasion residents of West Ward have petitioned for an election and a by election has duly been called.

The election will be held on Thursday 29th October 2015.
